How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference

The World Eskimo-Indian Olympics (WEIO) is a purely volunteer organization led by a dedicated working board and supported by one part-time employee. For over six decades, WEIO has continued through the shared commitment of countless volunteers, elders, athletes, and supporters who believe in passing our traditions to the next generation and creating a place where all Alaskans can gather to celebrate our shared heritage.​

Every July in Fairbanks, WEIO brings together athletes and spectators from across Alaska and beyond for four days of competition, culture, and connection. From the traditional games that test endurance and agility—such as the two-foot high kick, ear pull, and knuckle hop—to the regalia contest that showcases handcrafted parkas, kuspuks, moose hide dresses, and jewelry, WEIO is a living exhibition of strength, artistry, and ancestral pride. Our Miss WEIO contestants inspire with cultural storytelling, traditional talents, and speeches on Native issues, embodying leadership rooted in culture and community.​

Youth as young as twelve are encouraged to compete, while younger children watch and learn as elders share knowledge passed down for generations. For many participants, WEIO is not just an event—it is the only tie they have to their heritage, a way to reconnect with family, culture, and identity through shared experience and pride.​

Pick.Click.Give. makes a tremendous difference in allowing WEIO to continue and grow. Contributions from Alaskans’ Permanent Fund Dividends give our volunteer board the financial flexibility to produce the event each year and to stream it online for free. This ensures that every Alaskan—whether in a Fairbanks crowd or a rural village—can watch relatives compete, cheer for their hometown athletes, and share in this powerful celebration of culture.

Each gift helps cover essential costs such as venue operations, contracts, supplies and honoring our elders with front row seats and traditional foods at the elder lounge.
