About
Koahnic Broadcast Corporation is a non-profit, Alaska Native/Native American media center headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska. KBC was created in 1992 by Alaska Native leaders to preserve culture, combat widespread misconceptions and prejudices against Alaska Natives, and create cross-cultural bridges. The mission of KBC is to be the leader in bringing Native voices to Alaska and the nation. Today, KBC is a leading producer and distributor of multimedia Indigenous stories and radio programs. KBC operates KNBA 90.3 FM in Anchorage, the nation’s first urban Native radio station. KNBA broadcasts more than 2,000 hours of original radio programming annually, including news, public affairs, cultural programs, and contemporary music. KNBA first signed on the air in October 1996. Beyond the reach of the Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley, KNBA streams its broadcast signal 24/7 at http://www.knba.org. The RIVR (Rising Indigenous Voices Radio) is our youth-oriented online radio stream at therivr.net. The RIVR mixes cultural and educational content with music that appeals to teens and young adults; and provides an ideal forum for youth-oriented and youth-produced programming. Our national production center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, produces the award-winning programs Native America Calling and National Native News, distributed nationally by KBC's program service Native Voice One (NV1). Through NV1, rural Alaska stations (including 13 Native stations) are able to carry these programs.
How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
KBC raises funds to cover our operations and programming year-round. We secure revenue from corporate underwriters, private foundations, public funders, and membership drives. After funding from Corporation of Public Broadcasting was eliminated in 2026, individual donations contributed through initiatives such as Pick.Click.Give continue to be an increasingly important resource of unrestricted funding. These donations enable us to support operating costs and purchase items such as broadcasting equipment and production supplies for special news and cultural programming that is shared with other Alaska stations. This special programming includes annual broadcast coverage of the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention.
