Empowering Alaska's Youth to Build the Habit of Daily Physical Activity.

About

Healthy Futures - the signature program of the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame - is a statewide initiative working to empower Alaska’s youth to build the habit of daily physical activity.

How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference

Leading Alaskan health officials identify obesity as the predominant public health threat of our lifetime expecting it to overtake tobacco as the leading cause of death. Alaska's obesity-related Medicaid costs are expected to be $684 million annually by 2030 if rates continue as predicted.

In Alaska 26% of Alaska high school students are overweight or obese and 36% of K-12th graders in the Anchorage School District are overweight or obese.

Increased physical activity is a recommended component of a collaborative approach to fighting childhood obesity. In addition, physical activity is the leading prescription for the reduction of obesity thus decreasing the chances of hypertension and diabetes, two of the leading causes of kidney disease.

Healthy Futures is committed to leading the way by empowering youth to build the habit of daily physical activity. The program provides two core programs, the Healthy Futures Challenge (in which children are rewarded for completing activity logs) and increasing youth attendance at community recreational events.

Healthy Futures places a priority on health inequity by working to make it easier for underserved children to attend community events by providing benefits including the coverage of event entry fees, bus services to events from schools with high poverty rates, and an after school program at a Title 1 school each year. A tremendous area of growth has been through the addition of a third program component - The Game Changer fund, which addresses the health equity issue we face in Alaska. Through the Game Changer fund, youth from low-income families can apply for support to allow them to participate in sports and recreation opportunities (or just put shoes on their feet) they would not otherwise have access to otherwise.

Your support through the Pick.Click.Give. program will help to cover the costs of running a program that works with over 100 schools and 15,000 children around the state, provides support to over 115 community events, and has awarded 134 grants for the 2025/2026 school year. Of the 134, 125 were individuals and 9 were team awardees of up to $500 per grant.

Together we can build a healthier future for Alaska and its people!
