The mission of Haines Huts and Trails (HHT) is to foster wilderness experiences in some of our region’s most inspiring locations by developing and maintaining public use backcountry cabins and trails. Since our formation as a 501c3 organization in 2018, HHT has been working to become the trusted expert in planning, fundraising, and building public recreational opportunities in Haines. In 2024, we, and our many volunteers, built and opened the Tukga Hut, which is the first year-round public use cabin in the Chilkat Valley. In winter 2023-24, we launched a winter trails program to provide trail grooming in the region to support winter recreation activities and community health. Both the Haines and Klukwan snow school programs utilize these trails throughout the winter. In 2025, we launched our trail building and maintenance program, which included the first paid trail maintenance project (the Skyline Boardwalks Rebuild) in Haines during the past decade. Volunteers also put in hundreds of hours towards drainage, tread, and brushing work on our trails, which continue to be a huge asset for our community and its visitors.
