About
Organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1998, Green Star encourages the reuse of materials, reduction of unnecessary waste, and increased recycling efforts in Interior Alaska. Green Star accomplishes its mission by serving as the contractor for electronics recycling for the FNSB, the operator of the FNSB Central Recycling Facility, the Regional Coordinator for Backhaul Alaska and the operator of Reuse IT, Repair IT and Rebuild IT refurbished computer programs as well as provider of Reboot IT Technology Grants to low income and nonprofit Alaskans.

Community Outreach:Green Star of Interior Alaska has been retooling its repair and resale work by building used laptops to help close the technology gap in Fairbanks during this time when having access to a computer is so critical. During the COVID-19 crisis we are offering these computers for free or reduced-cost to assist folks without the ability to connect with loved ones while isolated at home, connect to technology to work remotely, apply for jobs or home school their kids. Green Star has given out over 800 computers to members of the community since May of 2020. In 2024 the program was expanded to include both low-income Alaskans, and Alaska Nonprofit organizations.
Special Event Recycling:
• Green Star partners with a variety of community organizations to provide recycling bins at special events and coordinate volunteers who collect and sort recyclable materials.
• You may have seen them at the Arctic Winter Games, Midnight Sun Festivals, and Golden Wheel Amusements Summer Spectacular.
• Every year Green Star helps out with Clean Up Day in May and Stream Clean Up Day in June.
Educational Outreach:
• Green Star published the first edition of the Fairbanks Recycling Guide in August 2011. This comprehensive resource includes valuable information to help community members navigate the recycling scene in Fairbanks. This guide is updated, published, and available on our website, including a newly redesigned interactive recycling ad reuse online version available at https://iagreenstar.org/guide. We also publish a library of FNSB recycling resources in an online library at https://iagreenstar.org/fmsbrecycles.
•We have a free, accredited middle-school Recycling Education Curriculum to teach students the need for and ways to recycle locally.
