Alaska Food Policy Council

Homer, AK • EIN: 46-5017514

The Alaska Food Policy Council connects, advocates, and informs, to strengthen food systems for all Alaskans.

About

We envision healthy, secure, abundant food systems that feed all Alaskans. The AFPC is open to anyone interested in improving Alaska’s food systems – agencies and individuals representing federal and state agencies, tribal entities, schools, university programs, farmers, fisheries, and food systems businesses. The role of the AFPC is to: CONNECT - We engage with Alaskans across sectors to gather input that will strengthen our food systems and create spaces for collaboration. ADVOCATE - We develop policy and investment recommendations and share them with decision makers at the local, state, federal, and Tribal levels. INFORM - We conduct food systems research, share information, resources, opportunities, and challenges with all food stakeholders.

How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference

Direct public support, grants, and sponsorships support our work, including:

-Developing recommendations and sharing them with policymakers at the local, state, federal, and tribal levels; and sharing information, resources, opportunities, and risks with all food stakeholders through the Advocacy Working Group and On the Menu legislative update blog posts; Food Security Week in Juneau and publishing candidate surveys that let voters know how people running for political office view various food systems issues.

-Hosting the every 18-months Alaska Food Festival and Conference to bring together food producers, advocates, educators, experts, and more to connect, educate, and celebrate together; one of AFPC's key outreach and networking events and the largest statewide food systems gathering!

- Hosting the quarterly Alaska Food Systems Network Gatherings virtually with guest speakers and topics chosen from Alaska’s food systems community.

-Connecting Alaskans through statewide working groups - Advocacy, School Nutrition, Indigenous Foods, Food Waste, Hydroponics, Food Hubs, and Conference Planning.

-Working to further Indigenous food security with Alaska Native/American Indian communities, by advocating for food sovereignty and for policies that affect the production, sale/ trade of Indigenous foods.

-Addressing food waste by acknowledging current statewide and local policies and actions, promoting specific proactive activities and programs, and looking for additional ideas and solutions.

-Communicating by aggregating content, highlighting partner events and opportunities, and creating engaging and informative newsletters, social media posts, press releases, annual reports, toolkits, and blog posts.

-Connects Alaskans through projects like our Regional Food Systems Partnership, which aims to link localized food system organizations to create a statewide network of “regional nodes”.
