Founded in 1997, ACAT was the first environmental health & justice organization in Alaska. Our vision is for a toxics-free, plastics-free, climate-stable future for Alaska and the world. For 30 years we have successfully advanced local, state, and international actions to protect Alaskan families from harmful chemical exposures and safeguard Alaska’s air, water, and food. ACAT is a national leader in community-based participatory research, working with tribes & university scientists to gather evidence of the nature & extent of toxic contamination in Alaska. However, much of ACAT’s scientific research is funded by federal grants and that money cannot be used for assisting communities to achieve justice for the harm caused by pollution. For that, we need support from Alaskans like you. The following are just some of the ways your Pick.Click.Give. donation to ACAT will make a difference.
ACAT helps communities throughout Alaska identify toxic chemicals and their associated health problems, then works to phase out the chemicals that are persistent, bio-accumulative, and harmful to health and replace them with safe alternatives. Your Pick.Click.Give. donation will help send our science and policy staff to state, national, or international meetings and negotiations to advance policies that address environmental justice, health, and climate issues and advocate for solutions to plastics and chemical pollution. Your donation will also support education and outreach initiatives. For example, ACAT works with the Alaska Run for Women to provide information about breast cancer prevention and action women can take to reduce their risks. Because children are especially vulnerable to environmental toxics and persistent organic pollutants, we also educate parents about children's environmental health and how they can reduce exposure to toxic chemicals found in toys, food packaging, furniture, and other household items.
ACAT supports reusing and recycling consumer products to decrease waste & the impact to the environment of toxic materials entering landfills & municipal water supplies. ACAT's organic gardening project helps Alaskans grow food without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. And all of this converges in our Plastic Free 907 program to eliminate unnecessary uses of plastics, which contain toxic petrochemicals that are a hidden driver of climate change and harm people's health and the oceans.
