About

Founded in 1985, thread offers statewide services to families, early childhood educators and programs, and businesses and communities. As Alaska’s Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) organization, thread offers statewide services to families, early childhood educators and programs, and businesses and communities. For forty years, thread has been advancing the quality of early education and child development in Alaska by empowering parents, educating early childhood professionals, and collaborating with our communities. To realize this mission, thread works statewide in over 58 communities, helping more than 10,000 families each year find high-quality early childhood programs, training more than 3,000 early childhood educators annually, and offering onsite assistance and technical consultation to almost 300 early childhood education programs throughout Alaska yearly.

Child care remains a pressing need in Alaska. thread works to stabilize, strengthen and grow the child care sector through direct services, problem solving partnerships, and advocacy for policy and funding change. All services and work are strength-based and aimed at serving the child care needs of today while creating sustainable change for a more accessible, affordable and high-quality early childhood education sector for Alaska.

thread's targeted daily services and supports deliver customer driven impact for early childhood educators, early childhood education programs, family supports and referrals, community collaborations, and other statewide initiatives. In addition, thread provides responsive initiatives to current needs in child care enabling child care programs to open, expand, and thrive through programs that support child care small businesses, child care professionals, and local economies. Additionally, by embracing the role of research and data in the child care sector, thread stands as a trusted voice on issues related to child care and strives to increase public awareness of the impact of child care on families, Alaska’s workforce, and the greater economy.

Child care is more than just a service for young children; it is a cornerstone of Alaska’s economic growth. Investments in early childhood care have been proven to hold lasting economic and social benefits for children, families, and communities. Quality early childhood education programs strengthen our communities by helping parents meet the financial needs of their families and strong early childhood education programs also help businesses attract and retain a high-quality workforce. Most importantly, quality early childhood programs support more positive outcomes for children and help to ensure that children succeed in school and in life.
