About
Based in McCarthy, Alaska, the WMC is the oldest continuously active educational organization serving communities within and surrounding Wrangell–St. Elias National Park & Preserve. Incorporated in 1986, the WMC serves students of all ages, local and visiting artists, scientists, community members and national park visitors. WMC programs and services explore science and the arts in an inspirational mountain setting at a rustic, off-the-grid campus and community hub where students and participants also gain exposure to the values of self-sufficiency and sustainable living.

We excel in place-based experiential learning. Examples of our diverse programmatic repertoire include the Alaska Wrangell Mountains Field Studies, a college environmental studies field course; Mountains Arts and Science for Youth, where visiting artists and scientists spend an afternoon sharing their expertise with youth; multi-day intensive arts and writing residencies and workshops; a lecture series for locals and visitors about the arts and sciences, on-going park research, and mountain culture of the Wrangells. We also support artists and scientists doing research in McCarthy and the Wrangell-St. Elias by providing a welcoming, intellectually curious atmosphere that connects researchers and artists with each other and the local community. We believe in the power of community and the stories we share, particularly now, during times of tension and change.
