NAMI Fairbanks is an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation's largest grass-roots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans living with mental illness. 1 in 5 adults in the US (including Alaska) experience a mental illness, and less than half receive the help they need. For over 40 years, NAMI Fairbanks has been providing support, education, and advocacy for people experiencing psychiatric disabilities, their families, friends, and interested community members. NAMI Fairbanks envisions a community that promotes mental health, recovery from mental illness, access to treatment with a caring attitude and cultural sensitivity for all who are affected by mental illness, and elimination of the stigma associated with any mental health condition. It believes in working together to build a thriving, compassionate community that knows how to help when someone they care about is experiencing mental illness. It is a trusted partner in: • The Fairbanks Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for police officers • The Fairbanks Crisis Now initiative advancing mental health crisis response • The Fairbanks Pediatric Behavioral Health Workgroup, addressing children’s mental health • The FNSB School District, bringing mental health education and resources to all middle and high school students in the district • The Fairbanks Correctional Center, bringing mental health information to the reentry education program
