Reduce the population of unwanted animals via low-cost spay /neutering services and free alterations and vaccines for feral cats
About
Ketchikan Humane Society is an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff and no facility. Our primary mission is to reduce local animal euthanasia rates, improve community education and to help abused and abandoned animals have a second chance to find a permanent loving home by promoting local shelter animals through social media.
How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
The Ketchikan Humane Society (KHS) was founded in 2001 by a group of dedicated locals to address the chronic overpopulation of pets in our community. In its early years, KHS focused on fostering and rehoming animals in need.
In 2012, faced with the heartbreaking number of unwanted animals being euthanized, KHS expanded its mission to include the Spay Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP). This program provides financial assistance to pet owners, with KHS and local veterinary clinics covering the remaining cost of spay and neuter surgeries. Since its start, the SNIP program has altered an average of 100 pets per year—all funded entirely through donations. Every altered pet represents fewer litters born into uncertain futures, and every donation plays a direct role in preventing animal suffering.
In 2023, a new board refined KHS’s mission to focus solely on low-cost spay/neuter services and altering feral cats, while supporting the local shelter by promoting adoptable animals. This shift allows KHS to direct resources toward reducing pet overpopulation at its root.
Vet care is expensive, and for many Southern Southeast Alaska communities—including Metlakatla and Prince of Wales—the challenge is even greater. With no veterinarians in town, pet owners must travel and pay additional transportation costs just to access care. Through the SNIP program, KHS helps bridge this gap, ensuring families in these communities can afford to alter their pets and reduce the cycle of unwanted litters.
By the end of September 2025, KHS had approved 98 pets for low-cost spay/neuter procedures and 43 feral cats for alteration. We are on track to help alter well over 150 animals in Southern Southeast Alaska this year alone. This alone prevents tens of thousands of potential unwanted animals in the next decade.
Every one of these successes is made possible through the generosity of donors. Your gift directly funds surgeries that save lives, prevent unwanted litters, and give animals across our region the chance to thrive. On behalf of the pets and families whose lives are touched by this work—thank you!
