About
Koahnic Broadcast Corporation is a non-profit, Alaska Native/Native American media center headquartered in Anchorage. Koahnic was created as a non-profit corporation in 1992 by Alaska Native leaders to preserve culture and languages, combat widespread misconceptions and prejudices against Alaska Natives, and create cross-cultural bridges. The mission of Koahnic is to be the leader in bringing Native voices to Alaska and the nation. Koahnic operates KNBA 90.3 FM in Anchorage, the first urban Native radio station. KNBA broadcasts more than 2,000 hours of original radio programming annually, including news, public affairs and contemporary music. KNBA first signed on the air in October 1996. KNBA streams its broadcast signal 24/7 at http://www.knba.org. The RIVR (Rising Indigenous Voices Radio) is our youth-oriented online radio stream at therivr.net. RIVR mixes cultural and educational content with music that appeals to teens and young adults; and provides an ideal forum for youth-oriented and youth-produced programming. Our national production center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, produces the award-winning programs Native America Calling and National Native News, distributed nationally by Koahnic's program service Native Voice One. Many Alaska stations carry these programs, along with Indigefi, our national weekly contemporary indigenous music program.
How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
Koahnic raises funds to cover our operations and programming year-round, securing revenue from corporate underwriters, private foundations and public funders, and membership drives. The individual donations contributed through Pick.Click.Give are an important resource of unrestricted funding for us. These enable us to purchase needed equipment and supplies for production and broadcasting, and help produce special news and cultural programming that is shared with other Alaska stations, including annual broadcast coverage of the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention.
