KCAW-FM Raven Radio is a community radio in Sitka: a mirror on ourselves and a window on the world. On the air since 1982.
About
KCAW-FM is a non-commercial community radio station owned and operated by Raven Radio Foundation, Inc. of Sitka. KCAW has been broadcasting to the rural Southeast Alaska communities of Sitka, Angoon, Elfin Cove, Kake, Pelican, Port Alexander, Tenakee Springs and Yakutat, as well as a wide expanse of the coastal fishing grounds since 1982. We provide essential information, such as Emergency Alert System and AMBER announcements, tsunami and other severe weather warnings, as well as local, regional, state, national and international news and entertainment programming to a listening population of more than eleven thousand people. Volunteer programming and community involvement are key components of Raven Radios mission. The station has more than 1200 members and 100 active volunteers. During a typical week, more than 75 Sitkans are on the air. Raven Radio has a solid reputation for training young journalists. Several former staff and volunteers are now award-winning national producers. KCAW is a member of CoastAlaska Inc., a consortium of Southeast community radio organizations. Efficiencies created through this partnership include centralized accounting, support for administrative, development and engineering services, and cooperation and shared content among news departments. KCAW is located in the historic Cable House, built in 1908 and listed on the National Historical Register as the receiving station of the first telegraph cable connecting Alaska directly to the lower 48.

Raven Radio provides the only access to the Emergency Alert System in several remote Southeast Alaska communities that are accessible only by floatplane or boat, with very limited phone and internet service and few or no radio or television signals. In recent years, earthquakes have generated a tsunami warnings for all the coastal communities we broadcast in. Our translator equipment broadcast lowland evacuation orders for these communities.Contributions for individuals are Raven Radios largest source of funding. Donations from Pick.Click.Give. help to provide public radio to the remote southeast Alaskan communities of Angoon, Elfin Cove, Kake, Pelican, Port Alexander, Tenakee Springs and Yakutat. Several of these communities receive no other radio or television broadcast signal besides Raven Radio.
