The Fairbanks Senior Center has provided the Meals on Wheels nutrition delivery program to seniors in the Fairbanks North Star Borough since 1973. Meals on Wheels is a lifesaver for older adults who struggle with food insecurity and issues resulting from a lack of nutrition. Meals on Wheels is provided at no charge to Alaskans in the Fairbanks North Star Borough who are at least 60 years of age and have a physical or economic stress. Food insecurity negatively impacts older adults more than any other age group, with malnutrition directly linked to diabetes, heart problems, and other chronic health conditions. Poor health conditions can adversely impact mental health, leading to greater emotional distress and depression risks. The ability of older adults to live independently in their own homes is directly related to their physical and mental well-being. A lack of nutrition can quickly and negatively impact this ability. Over 60,000 meals, along with 60,000 wellness checks, were delivered last year to help our cherished Pioneers live safely at home.
