Billing revenue support the majority of ASBHC services. Grant funding and donations allow ASBHC to offer a generous sliding fee scale based on family income, and do not refuse service based on inability to pay. We do not receive funding from the Anchorage School District. Donations support medical care low-income, uninsured students.
An example of the acute care provided: ASBHC has seen an increase in students with ear/hearing issues, possibly tied to increase use of ear buds. One student had completely lost hearing in one ear. The resident and faculty who provided care were very concerned. They arranged for the student to be seen that afternoon by an ENT. The student’s ear was cleaned, an infection was treated, and a follow up appointment was arranged (which the family kept!). If left untreated, the situation could have resulted in permanent damage and/or hearing loss.
