About
The Alaska Zoo was founded in 1968 to provide homes for orphaned and injured wildlife, along with captive-born animals in need of permanent homes. The goal of establishing a wildlife rescue zoo was to care for animals in need while providing educational and enriching opportunities for the public. The zoo opened as the Alaska Children's Zoo in August of 1969 and has been in operation since. Over the decades, we have expanded and grown to become a modern facility for visitors, with top-notch veterinary care and 30 acres of naturally wooded trails to keep the wild Alaskan feeling alive. Even as the zoo changed over time, we have remained true to our roots and original mission.

Your donation through Pick.Click.Give makes a huge difference for the Alaska Zoo. Your generosity helps to supplement zoo operations and defray expenses. A facility like ours is expensive to operate with facility upgrades, maintenance, veterinary care, medicines, food, animal supplies, trail maintenance, utilities, staffing, vehicles and more. Each summer, we have unknown numbers of orphaned young wildlife who are brought to us by agency biologists. All of these animals need specialized 24/7 care and, in some cases, transportation to new facilities. The zoo generates roughly 80% of it's operational income from gate entry, memberships, events, programs and sales in our Gift Shop and Coffee Shop. The remaining 20% comes from community support, donors, sponsors, grants and generous giving programs like Pick.Click.Give. We are proud to be a self-sustaining facility, however we could not advance and grow for future generations without support from the community.
