Alaska Natural Burial

Providing environmental conservation, stewardship, and equitable access to green space and natural burial.

About

Alaska Natural Burial is an Anchorage-based nonprofit working to establish Alaska's first certified conservation burial cemetery. This is a place where the cycles of life and death are honored through sustainable practices and enduring land stewardship. Our mission is threefold: environmental conservation, equitable access to meaningful deathcare, and the creation of shared green space for the community. In a natural burial cemetery, no concrete vaults, metal caskets, or embalming chemicals are used. Bodies are returned to the earth simply and gently. Graves become part of the living landscape rather than disrupting it. Our organization is led by an all-volunteer Board of Directors and guided by core values of community, sustainability, service, and respect. We believe that access to meaningful deathcare is a human right — and that how we care for our dead can also be how we care for the land we love.

How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference

Alaska Natural Burial is at a pivotal moment. We have identified the location of our future home and built a coalition of community partners, but bringing Alaska's first conservation burial cemetery to life requires resources. Your donation moves this vision forward in concrete ways.

Securing the Land
Our proposed site is a special and irreplaceable piece of urban forest. Donations support the legal, planning, and advocacy work required to acquire this parcel and establish the binding conservation protections that will keep it wild in perpetuity. Once conserved as a Conservation Burial Ground, this land can never be developed.

Building Infrastructure for the Living and the Dead
Establishing a functioning cemetery requires permitting, trail development, site planning, and accessible entry points, all designed with the lightest possible footprint. Your support helps us build a space that serves grieving families and the broader community as a park, a wildlife habitat, and a place for quiet reflection.

Making Natural Burial Accessible
We are committed to equitable access to green burial. Donations help us maintain a sliding scale fee structure so that a meaningful, ecological death is not a privilege reserved for the few. Every Alaskan deserves the option to return to the land they love.

Funding the Work of a Young Nonprofit
As an all-volunteer organization, we keep our overhead lean but there are real costs to doing this work well: legal fees, regulatory compliance, community outreach, and professional consultation with soils scientists, wildlife biologists, and land use specialists. Donors make it possible for us to pursue this work rigorously and transparently.
Conservation burial cemeteries across the United States have demonstrated that how we care for our dead can become one of the most enduring gifts we leave to the living. In Anchorage, your donation helps protect a wildlife corridor, preserve biodiverse urban forest, and give Alaskans a new way to come home.
