Alaska Eating Disorders Alliance provides help and inspires hope by engaging our diverse communities in education, advocacy, and support for Alaskans affected by eating disorders. AKEDA was founded in 2019 by two Alaskans who experienced eating disorders in their families and saw the gaps in awareness and services in our state. They came together to ensure that no other Alaskans would need to walk this journey alone as they sought recovery for these debilitating illnesses. Alaskans deserve to thrive in supportive, informed communities with access to effective, compassionate treatment for eating disorders. EDUCATION - AKEDA prioritizes building awareness, busting myths and growing capacity and expertise within Alaska’s healthcare system to manage eating disorders and save lives. We also train communities, educators, coaches, and parents in prevention education that promotes youth body confidence and positive self esteem to reduce the risk of developing eating disorders. ADVOCACY - We mobilize a network of advocates — including individuals with lived experience, family and friends, and healthcare providers — and work towards systemic changes that enhance equitable access to services and improve prevention and public health responses at the local, state, and national levels. SUPPORT - Nobody should have to walk this journey alone. AKEDA empowers individuals, families, and providers with regular support groups, skills-building events, and other practical resources.
